1. Map Tools

These tools are used for map navigation and to make selections and queries. Click on each tool to select it.

Zoom In:  Zooms in on the position you click or the box you define on the map. This tool allows you to view a smaller portion of the map display. Click the button, then place the mouse cursor near an area on the map which you would like to zoom to. Left click your mouse button and while holding it down, drag the mouse to draw a red, rectangular box . The smaller you draw the box, the farther in you will zoom.

Zoom Out:  Zooms out from the position you click or the area you define on the map. This tool allows you to zoom out and view a larger portion of the map display. Click the button, then place the mouse cursor near an area on the map which you would like to zoom out to. Left click your mouse button and while holding it down, drag the mouse to draw a red rectangular box. The smaller you draw the box, the farther out you will zoom.

Full Extent:  Zooms back to the Spokane City Limits.

Pan:  This tool allows you to move the map display without zooming in or out. Click the button, then position the cursor over the map. Left click your mouse button and while holding it down, move the mouse in any direction to drag the map display to a new location.

Select:  Use this tool to select features by clicking or by drawing a rectangle with your mouse. The selected features will be highlighted on the map and associated tabular data will be displayed.

Clear:  This tool clears any selected or highlighted features.


2. Crime Types

A list of general crime classifications. Clicking on each general crime classification will display the appropriate crime data.

All:  A composite of all crime data will be displayed

Assault:  an assault by one person upon another with the intent to inflict great bodily harm.
Assault in the First Degree may involve a firearm or any deadly weapon or by any force or means likely to produce great bodily harm or death.
Assault in the Second Degree under circumstances not amounting to assault in the first degree.
Assault in the Third Degree may involve someone in an authority position (i.e., police officer, fireman, nurse, doctor, transit operator, school teacher/official, etc.) while performing their duties or an assault not amounting to an assault in the second degree.
Assault in the Fourth Degree is considered a general assault of another.

Burglary:  the unlawful entry (or a person who unlawfully remains) in a structure (either residential or non-residential, and not a vehicle) with intent to commit a theft.
Commercial Burglary is an unlawful entry to a non-residential structure (business site or commercial offices, buildings and including fenced commercial yards).
Residential Burglary is the unlawful entry of a residential structure (dwelling - house, or apartment).
Garage Burglary is the unlawful entry of a structure that is not a vehicle (although the vehicle can be in the structure), dwelling, or non-residential, either attached or unattached to a residential structure (garage, shed, outbuilding).
Making or Possessing Burglar Tools - anyone who shall make or mend or cause to be made or mended, or have in his possession, any engine, machine, tool, false key, pick lock, bit, nippers, or implement adapted, designed, or commonly used for the commission of burglary.

Drugs:  the unlawful possession, delivery, or manufacturing of illegal drugs.

Malicious Mischief:  when someone knowingly and maliciously causes physical damage to the property of another.

Robbery:  when someone unlawfully takes personal property from the person of another or in his presence, against his will, by the use or threatened use of immediate force, violence, or fear of injury to that person or his property or the person or property of anyone. Classes of robbery include Commercial, Bank, or Robbery (strongarm).

Theft:  the unlawful taking of property from the possession of another.
First Degree Theft is when property or services exceed(s) one thousand five hundred dollars in value.
Second Degree Theft is when property or services exceed(s) two hundred and fifty dollars in value.
Third Degree Theft (City Theft) is when property or service does not exceed two hundred and fifty dollars.

Vehicle Prowling:  intent to commit a crime against property therein, when unlawful entry is made into a vehicle, motor home, or boat.

Vehicle Theft:  the theft or attempted theft of a motor vehicle; includes motorcycles.

None:  Clicking this option wil turn off all crime data and clear any selected or highlighted features.


3. Table of Contents Tabbing

The Layers, Legend, Info and Search tabs control what is displayed below them in the table of contents section of the viewer.

Layers:  Map information is organized into themes or layers. Please see turning layers on and off for more information

Legend:  Clicking the legend tab will display an extensive list of how all layers in the map viewer are symbolized.  Please note that not all layers in the legend may be active at any one time.

Info:  Contains current or previously selected tabular information about map features.

Search:  Clicking on the Search tab will display Crime Search and Address Search tools.


4. Crime Radius Search

This tools enables you to search out crimes within the selected 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile distance around the map center.

The crime type you are searching is determined by the one that is selected in the "Crime Types" list.

Tip: You can use the address search to center the map at a specific address location.


5. Map Display

The map display changes as you "zoom in," "zoom out,"pan", etc... You can manipulate the map display by using the Map Tools.  The active tool affects how the map display will change when you click on it.


6. Address Search

Address: Enter a street address. Please note: there are 4 parts to an address: Number, Direction, Street Name, and Street Type. (For Example: 808 W Spokane Falls Blvd.) Entering all address parts will results in better matching results. A list of address search results will be returned to the table of contents area. Results with higher scores are more closely matched to your search input.

Intersection Address: Enter the cross streets in the Street 1 and Street 2 input boxes. Only the Street Name and Street Type are required for this search (For Example: Street 1: Division St, Street 2: Riverside Av).

7. Interactive Zoom Bar

Clicking on each box on the zoom bar will zoom to a predefined map scale.


Turning Layers On and Off

A layer is visible on the map if there is a check in the square next to it under the heading 'Visible'.  You can turn layers on or off by clicking in the square.

This button refreshes the map.After you turn a layer on or off, hit the Redraw Map button to update the map.

By default, some layers may be turned on and others may be turned off when you initially open the map. In the example above, you can see that the "COPS Shops" and "Neighborhoods" layers are turned on.
